Abstract
Transition metal halides in which at least half the halogen content is fluorine and the rest is chlorine or bromine, are prepared by fluorinating a transition metal chloride or bromide with ethylidene difluoride or boron trifluoride, or both under anhydrous conditions in the presence of a chlorine-containing organic diluent. The transition metal may be Ti, V, Cr, Mo, Fe, Co, Ni, W or Zr. The molar ratio of the diluent, e.g. methyl, ethyl or n-propyl chloride to the transition metal halide is at least 1 : 1, preferably 5 : 1 to 50 : 1. The reactants may be introduced into an autoclave cooled to e.g. -78 DEG C. and reaction may take place at 0-200 DEG C. for e.g. 15 hours, in e.g. a nitrogen atmosphere. Optionally an electron donor compound may be present in the reaction mixture, or the starting halide may be complexed with such a compound, and the product is then so complexed, but only organic electron donor compounds are mentioned.
