995,099. Hydraulic brakes. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES, and M. TAUSEND, [trading as A. TEVES MASCHINEN - UND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM.-GES.]. May 8, 1962 [July 18, 1961], No. 17655/62. Heading F2F. An hydraulic braking system for vehicles comprises a pressure-reducing valve between a master cylinder and wheel brake-operating cylinders. The valve has a stepped piston 8, 9, disposed in a stepped bore of a casing 1, the end 9 of the piston experiences the master cylinder pressure connected at 3 and the end 8 experiences the wheel brake cylinder pressure connected at 7. A path 2 connects the master cylinder to the wheel brake cylinders and a valve 17 urged to the closed position by a spring 16 and urged to the open position by a plunger 20 loaded by an adjustable spring 21 controls the flow of pressure fluid along the path 2. Normally the valve 17 is held open and as the master cylinder pressure rises the wheel brake pressure rises equally as the stepped piston moves to the left, compressing spring means 14. At a predetermined pressure when the force of the spring 16 and the wheel brake cylinder pressure equals the force of spring 21 the valve 17 closes. Further rise in master cylinder pressure moves the stepped piston to the left, assisted by the spring means 14 so that the increase in wheel brake cylinder pressure follows a curve corresponding to the expansion of spring means 14. The curve becomes a straight line when the spring means 14 is completely unstressed but the rise in wheel brake cylinder pressure is less than the corresponding rise in master cylinder pressure in proportion to the ratio of the cross-sectional areas of pistons 8, 9.
