A flat machine having two pairs of needle beds disposed one behind the other and a number of cam carriages 1 adapted to traverse the needle beds in turn, has two thread guides 5 mounted on each cam carriage which can selectively be moved into or out of operation. A thread gripper is associated with each guide and secures the thread when the guide is taken out of operation.
