Abstract

A siloxane copolymer having the formula <FORM:0994396/C3/1> wherein R and R1 are each a saturated or unsaturated monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical, each R11 is a lower alkyl radical, a is at least 2, b is 2 or 3, n is 2, 3 or 4 and x has a value of at least 5, may be made by esterifying a liquid carboxyalkylorganopolysiloxane of the formula <FORM:0994396/C3/2> with a liquid polyalkylene glycol monoether having the formula HO(CnH2nO)xR11, can be made by esterifying the corresponding liquid carboxyalkylsiloxane with the desired liquid polyalkylene glycol monoether, preferably in the presence of an inert solvent and a catalyst, e.g. p-toluene sulphonic acid. The starting carboxyalkylsiloxanes may be made as described in Specification 20028/63, or by rearrangement and condensation of certain siloxanes and alkoxy-silanes. In a typical example (1) CH3SiCl3, (CH3)2SiCl2 and CNCH2.CH2CH2(CH3)2SiCl were hydrolysed and the resulting carboxyalkylsiloxane was mixed with toluene, p-toluene sulphonic acid and the mono-butyl ether of a mixed polyethylene-propylene-1, 2 - glycol and refluxed for 4 hours to yield, after cooling, filtration of the neutralized product and removal of toluene, a clear colourless liquid of the formula <FORM:0994396/C3/3> Uses.-As surface-active additives in the production of polyurethane foams. Many known polyisocyanates, polyols (polyesters and polyethers), blowing agents and catalysts are specified. Examples 13 to 18 describe the preparation of polyurethane foams using the siloxanes of preceding examples. Specification 994,397 is referred to.
