Abstract

994,246. Tiltable swivel seats. M. P. BURKE. July 16, 1963 [Feb. 25, 1963], No. 28073/63. Heading A4J. A tilt mechanism for a chair 10 comprises a hollow vertical post 12, a thrust member 19 mounted adjacent the top of the post 12 for angular movement about a vertical axis, a coil spring 47 located along the post 12, with its upper end bearing against the thrust member 19, a seat attaching flange 15 titably mounted on the thrust member for movement about a substantially horizontal axis skew to the vertical axis, and a rod 52 extending through the thrust member and attached adjacent one end to the flange 15 and adjacent the other end to the lower end of the spring 47. As shown, the thrust member 19 is threadably attached to a sleeve 20 fitted within the post 12, and a bearing assembly is interposed between the ends of the thrust member and the post to enable the seat 10 to swivel about the common axis of the sleeve 20 and the post 12 without undue frictional restraint. The flange 15 is pivotally connected to the thrust member 19 by horizontal cylindrical bearing pins 26 so that the seat 10 and flange 15 may pivot about their horizontal axis. Separation of the two parts is prevented by a locking screw 31 which passes through an arcuate slot 32 in the flange 15 and is connected to the thrust member 19. To limit angular movement of the seat an abutment member 41 is provided with a cross-pin 45 which engages the edges of an aperture 42 in the flange 15 when maximum tilt is reached. The seat is returned to its normal position by the action of the compression spring 47. This may be adjusted by turning a handle 66 which rotates the post 52 and thus raises or lowers a nut 50 threadably mounted on the post.
