Abstract

Oil-soluble copolymers are made by reacting with a compound containing at least one nontertiary amino group a copolymer of (A) an oil-solubilizing monoethylenic monomer containing a C4-C30 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, (B) a monoethylenic monomer containing an epoxy group, and (C) an ethylenic monomer having a polyglycol group containing at least 5 C2-C7 alkylene oxide units, to provide a copolymer having substituents of the formula -NR1R2 in which R1 is hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl or a polyalkylene polyamine group and R2 is hydrogen or a group of the R1 type, the molar ratio of (B) to the amino compound being approximately 1:1, and the molar ratio of (A) to (B) to (C) being in the range of from 1:1:1 to 100:1:1. The examples describe copolymers, of: (a) dodecyl, octadecyl, polyethylene glycoll monodecyl ether and glycidyl methacrylates (b) dodecyl, octadecyl and polyethylene glycomonododecyl ether methacrylates and butadiene monoxide, (c) dodecyl, octadecyl and polyethylene glycol monododecyl ether methl acrylates and allyl glycidyl ether, (d) viny stearate polyethylene glycol monododecyl ether methacrylate and allyl glycidyl ether, (e) vinyl acetate didodecyl fumarate, polyethylene glycol monododecyl ether methacrylate and allyl glycidyl ether, and (f) vinyl acetate, vinyl octanoate, diisopropyl and dihexadecyl fumarates, polypropylene glycol vinyl ether and allyl glycidyl ether, reacted with tetraethylene pentamine, dimethylaminopropylamine, diethylene triamine, N - methyl benzylamine, N - aminoethylheptadecenyl imidazoline and pyrrole. Also described is the preparation of copolymer (a) by copolymerization of the monomers in solution in benzene containing azobisisobutyronitrile as a catalyst. Specifications 761,897, 768,690, 768,701, 770,771 and 798,457 are referred to.ALSO:Detergent and antiwear properties are imparted to lubricating oils by dissolving therein 0.1 to 10% of a copolymer obtained by reacting a compound containing at least one non-tertiary amino group with a copolymer of (A) an oil-solubilizing monoethylenic monomer containing a C4-C30 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, (B) a monoethylenic monomer containing an epoxy group, and (C) an ethylenic monomer having a polyglycol group containing at least 5 C2-C7 alkylene oxide units, to provide a copolymer having substituents of the formula -NR1R2 in which R1 is hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl or a polyalkylene polyamine group, and R2 is hydrogen or a group of the R1 type, the molar ratio of (B) the amino compound being approximately 1 : 1, and the molar ratio of (A) to (B) to (C) being in the range of 1 : 1 : 1 to 100 : 1 : 1. The lubricating oil may be of the mineral type or may be synthetic, e.g. alkylated waxes, hydrogenated hydrocarbon polymers, condensation products of chlorinated paraffins with aryl compounds, polyalkylene oxides and ethers and esters thereof, di-(2-ethylhexyl)sebacate, tricresyl phosphate and silicate oils. Also present in the oils may be agents such as calcium alkyl phenates, organic thiophosphates, the reaction product of pinene and phosphorus pentasulphide, zinc butylhexyl and tetradecylphenyl dithiophosphates, and polydodecyl methacrylate. Representative of the amine-modified copolymers is a copolymer of dodecyl, octadecyl, polyethylene glycol monododecyl ether and glycidyl methacrylates reacted with tetraethylene pentamine.
