Abstract
A method for producing acrylonitrile comprises passing a vapour phase mixture comprising propylene, a molecular oxygen-containing gas, ammonia and steam at an elevated temperature over an oxidation catalyst and is characterized in that the reactants are preheated and that before contact with the catalyst ammonia and propylene are not contacted with the oxygen-containing gas at a temperature above 300 DEG C. The preheating may be performed by heating Ihe total reactant mixture to a temperature below 300 DEG C. or by heating one or more of the reactants to a temperature above 300 DEG C. provided that when mixed with the remaining reactants the resultant temperature is below 300 DEG C. The catalytic reaction may be performed above 300 DEG C., preferably 300 DEG to 600 DEG C., employing fixed or fluidized bed techniques and the oxygen-containing gas may be diluted with inert gas(es). In the examples a tin oxide/antimony oxide catalyst was employed but other specified catalysts are bismuth molybdate, phosphomolybdate or tungstate; antimony molybdate; tin antimonate; and cobalt molybdate.
