Abstract

989,885. Collecting blood. BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc. Aug. 18, 1961, No. 29810/61. Heading A5R. Apparatus for collecting blood comprises a flexible collecting tube, means for facilitating separation of a part of the tube from the remainder and a pointed cannula positioned in the tube so that separation of the tube exposes its pointed end. The collecting tube connects a phlebatomy needle 22 with a plastic blood receptacle 24. The tube comprises two tube portions 21, 23 joined by a coupling 30 which incorporates a cannula fixed to the tube portion 21 carrying the phlebatomy needle. When the two parts of the coupling are disengaged the point of the cannula is exposed. For collecting a blood sample the cannula is caused to pierce a self-sealing closure 57 of a sample tube 56 attached to the main receptacle. The tube portions may be in one piece weakened circumferentially in the region of the cannula or may be sealed together in the region of the cannula. For taking a blood sample the weakened portion (not shown) or the seal 35 is broken, thus exposing the cannula point. The tube portion 23 adjacent the receptacle may have a closing diaphragm 37 or plug (Fig. 5, not shown) which, when the collecting tube is used to conduct blood to the receptacle, is pierced by the cannula on axially collapsing part of this tube portion over the cannula. The plug or diaphragm is self-sealing on withdrawing the cannula from it. The adjacent ends of the tube portions may be connected by a sleeve (Fig. 5, not shown) which covers a portion of the cannula and is withdrawn with the tube portion 23 from the cannula to expose its point. Either or both tube portions may have exterior sleeves (Fig. 6, not shown) fixed to them, the sleeves being detachably interfitting over the cannula. The end of the tube portion to which the cannula is fixed may have a coupling portion 48 (Fig. 11) including a radial flange 49, the end of the other tube portion carrying a funnel-shaped coupling portion 54 which detachably engages the flange. A diaphragm closure integral with the funnel-shaped portion is located in the other tube portion and is punctured by the cannula on deforming the funnel-shaped portion over the cannula. When the main receptacle is filled, the tube portion 23 connected to it is divided by heat-sealing into segments each containing a blood sample and individually marked for identification.
