Abstract

989,818. Control of D.C. motors. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Sept. 10, 1963 [Sept. 24, 1962], No. 36194/62. Heading H2J. A starting circuit for a D.C. motor comprises a switching transistor 10 and a control transistor 12 across which is a bias resistor 30. Upon closure of a start switch 24 transistor 10 becomes fully conducting, passing maximum current through motor field 42 and energizing the armature 44 through the resistor 30, transistor 12 being initially partially conductive. As the motor accelerates the voltage drop across resistor 30 decreases, thus bringing the base potential at tap 36 nearer to that at collector 16 and causing the transistor to become increasingly conductive until full speed is reached. A thermal overload switch may be connected in the supply circuit.
