Abstract

A milled detergent bar comprises (a) 50-65% sodium soaps of C8- 18-fatty acids having a saponification value (S.V.) of 225-250, 40-70% of the acids being substantially saturated, containing 8-14 C-atoms and having an S.V. of 265-275, the balance of the acids having 16-18 C-atoms, and S.V. of 190-210 and an iodine value (I.V.) of 40-55; (b) an alkali metal C8- 20-alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonate mixture of which 10-30% comprises diglyceryl ether sulphonates, the balance being predominantly mono-glyceryl ether sulphonates; (c) C8- 18-fatty acids having an S.V. of 220-275 and an I.V. of 2-20, at least 25% having 8-14 C-atoms; (d) 4-10% of sodium chloride and/or sulphate; and (e) 2-8% water, the ratio (b) to (a) being 0.25-0.5 : 1, preferably 0.35 : 1, the ratio (c) to (a) being 0.1-0.25 : 1, preferably 0.18 : 1, and the bar being substantially free from alkaline earth metal salts. Soap (a) is most suitably a mixture derived from 57% coconut fatty acids and 43% tallow fatty acids; sulphonate (b) preferably comprises alkyl groups derived from middle-cut coconut alcohol; and fatty acids (c) is preferably an equal mixture of coconut and tallow fatty acids. If desired, the alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates (b) may be substituted with chlorine or hydroxyl groups; the cation present is generally sodium. The bar, which may also contain colour, perfume and antimicrobial agents, is suitably produced by crutching ingredients (a), (b) and (d), drum- or spray-drying the mixture, adding fatty acids (c) to the mixture in an amalgamator maintained at 90-100 DEG F., milling at the same temperature, and then plodding and stamping at 90-120 DEG F.
