Abstract

988,199. Vehicle suspension. AUSTIN MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 23, 1964 [April 3, 1963], No. 13125/63. Heading B7D. In a motor vehicle suspension wherein transversely extending control arms 11 and 13 support a wheel carrier assembly 12 on each side of the vehicle to mount a pair of coaxial wheels, one arm, 11, is provided with a bell crank, 10 acting upon a spring unit, the spring units of each of the coaxial wheels being disposed in a transversely disposed hollow structural member of the vehicle. The springs may be rubber cone, helical steel, or part of a conjugate hydraulic suspension wherein hydraulic displacer units incorporating rubber cone springs are intercoupled longitudinally at each side of the vehicle. As shown, a pair of such displacer units 1, 2, is housed in a transverse tube 3 held in a mounting plate 4 secured to a casting 6 connected to a front valance panel 7, the fore and aft units on each side of the vehicle being connected by tubes 31 and 32. The tube 3 is connected to an inner tube 23 by locating rings 24 and 25 and each spring is connected to the bell crank 10 by a strut 8 and ball joint 9. The suspension also comprises a radius rod 18 to take brake force reaction. Specifications 763,432 and 870,489 are referred to.
