Abstract
986,398. Kilns for fixing ceramics. METALL. WERK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN G.m.b.H. Sept. 13, 1961 [Aug. 1, 1961], No. 32899/61. Addition to 906,090. Heading F4B. In the kiln for firing ceramics disclosed in the parent Specification the conversion of CaO in the ware to CaCO s is facilitated by supplying combustion gases from the prefiring chamber 8 through duct 59 controlled by valve 60 to cooling chamber 10, a duct 43 leading from the latter to a waste flue 64. Valve controlled lines 66 supply treatment gases, e.g. steam, to the duct 59. Cooling chamber 10 has an inner hood 39 of thin, good conducting material with a large, upper inlet opening 40 through which the added combustion gases disperse during an initial phase of the cooling cycle. During most of the cooling cycle, valve 60 is closed and cooling air supplied by fan 25 and ducts 32 and 35, enters chamber 10 through bottom ports 42, passes around hood 39, and through inlet 40, finally passing through duct 43 and ports 46 into a preheating compartment 45. This is vented by a fan 49 and duct 50. Ware from compartment 45 passes to preheating chamber proper 7, where it is further heated by combustion gases leaving chamber 8 by duct 19. Final cooling is by air supplied through openings 54 in compartment 52.
