Abstract
A polymerization catalyst comprises the reaction product of vanadium tetrachloride or vanadium oxytrichloride, an organo-aluminium compound and diphenyl carbonate, wherein the mol. ratio of the aluminium compound to the vanadium compound is from 1:1 to 10:1 and the mole ratio of the organo-aluminium compound to diphenyl carbonate is from 5:1 to 6:5. The catalyst is used for copolymerizing, in an inert solvent, a feed stock consisting of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin and/or diolefin. The aluminium compound may be a trialkyl, or a dialkyl monohalide, or an alkyl dihalide. The solvent may be a hydrocarbon or a halogen-substituted hydrocarbon. The alpha-olefin may be propylene and the diene butadiene, isoprene, dicyclopentadiene, or 1,5-hexadiene. The catalyst may be prepared in situ, and the copolymer recovered by conventional techniques.
