Abstract
985,138. Toothed gearing. CLARK, OLSEN (GEARS) Ltd. Feb. 26, 1964 [March 11, 1963], No. 9498/63. Headings F2D and F2Q. Spur gearing comprises coaxial input and output pinions 16, 40 meshed by a series of splined intermediate compound pinions 17, 18; 20, 21...; carried by layshafts 13 equiangularly disposed around the axis of the pinions 16, 40, various gear ratios being obtainable by employing different combinations of compound pinions on one or more of the layshafts. As shown, there are six layshafts carrying compound pinions of the same ratio, but any of the ratios may be varied as required. To vary the overall ratio those pinions and layshafts not required are removed from the gear casing, the pinion 37 meshing with output pinion 40 being transferred to the final effective layshaft. The shafts are carried in aligned end bearings 8, 12 fitted in recesses in the end portion 5 of the casing 6 and in a detachable cover 9, while the axial positions of the pinions on the shafts are determined by sleeves 19; 22, 23 ...; of appropriate lengths.
