Abstract
In a modification of the invention claimed in the parent Specification the platinum coating is formed on a titanium or titanium base alloy support by applying several coatings of a platinum compound in an organic vehicle and heating each coating in an oxidizing atmosphere at 350-550 DEG C. The titanium base alloys may be titanium with up to 14% zirconium, titanium with up to 5% platinum, rhodium or iridium and titanium with up to 10% of niobium or tantalum. The platinum coating may also contain rhodium or iridium and in one example a coating containing 70% platinum and 30% iridium is applied. The platinum bearing preparation contains 2-9% platinum and comprises solutions of the resinates or sulpho resinates of platinum in oils, e.g. a solution of chloroplatinic acid in ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol may be added to an equal volume of a 1:1 mixture of abietic acid and oil of cloves. The cleaned and etched titanium surface may first be coated with an electrolytic deposit of platinum. The coated assembly is used as an anode in electrolytic cells for the manufacture of chlorine and caustic alkali. Specifications 758,013, 845,043, 885,817, 905,749 and 911,425 also are referred to.
