Abstract

Hydrocarbons are dehydrogenated by treating the hydrocarbon at 200-1500 DEG C. with a mixture of sulphur, oxygen and sulphur dioxide. A dehydrogenation catalyst, e.g. tungsten or molybdenum sulphide or a thiotungstate or thiomolybdate supported on pumice, charcoal or brick, may also be employed. A molecular ratio of hydrocarbon to total sulphur in the sulphur/oxygen/sulphur dioxide mixture of up to 1 : 1 is specified. The process may be carried out at atmospheric conditions. The preparation of butadienes from crude butenes, isoprene from isopentane and styrene from ethylbenzene is referred to. Specification 796,085 is referred to.
