Abstract
984,316. Rotary I.C. engines; gear pumps. O. CAREDDU. July 27, 1962 [July 28, 1961], No. 29036/62. Heading F1F. Rotary internal combustion engines. A rotary internal combustion engine of the geared vane type comprises two co-axial shafts 8, 12 (Fig. 1) each having two diametrally opposed arms such as 75 on each of which a piston 76 is mounted in a toroidal working chamber. Also fixed to the shafts are crown wheels 9 and 13, which mesh with planet gears 15 and drive an output shaft fixed to a spur gear 17 (Fig. 2). The motion of the two parts of pistons is controlled by three concentric cam tracks A, B and C (Fig. 9) formed on the radially outer parts of each of the crown wheels 9, 13, and facing one another to engage a cam follower 18 pivotably mounted through a bearing 29a to the casing. The cam follower has a pin 29b to engage the cams A and B and, on each side, a notch 8 to engage projections on the cam track C. In operation, each crown wheel, and its associated pistons, are alternately held by the projection and notch 8, and allowed to move through 180 degrees when the notch and the projection are disengaged by the cams A and B rocking the follower 18. Sealing rings 23 e.g. of trapezoidal section are fitted between the shafts 8, 12 and the lining of the toroidal chamber. The engine casing is jacketed for cooling and oil is circulated through the pistons for cooling, and through a bore in each piston to lubricate the chamber walls. An oil trap (Fig. 8, not shown) is provided outside the exhaust port. Gear pumps. The meshing gears 16, which carries the planet gears 15 (Fig. 2), and 17, fixed to the output shaft, form a gear pump for pumping lubricating oil through the engine.
