Abstract
Unsaturated fatty acids are polymerized by heating in the presence of a lithium stabilized clay in the absence of water. The lithium may be present as a compound in the clay or lithium ions may replace cations such as potassium sodium, calcium and magnesium in the clay. The clay may be present in 10 to 35% by weight based on the fatty acid, and a temperature in a range 160 to 230 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure is preferred. The product is filtered and decolourised by conventional methods. Acids with from 8 to 22 carbon atoms are listed and acetylenic acids may be used. Examples describe the polymerization of tall oil fatty acids and oleic acid.ALSO:Lithium stabilized clays are used in the heat polymerization of unsaturated fatty acids in the absence of water. Lithium compounds are incorporated with the clay, e.g. montmorillonite containing Fe impurities, and the lithium ions may replace at least in part the cations such as potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium, of the clay. The lithium compounds added to the clay may be lithium halides, e.g. LiCl or LiF, salts of aliphatic hydrocarbon monocarboxylic acids with up to 22 C atoms, or hydroxide or carbonate which form a fatty acid lithium salt in situ. The exchangeable cations in the clay may be replaced by adding a soluble lithium salt followed by washing or dialysis purification, or by treating the clay with a cation exchange resin in hydrogen form, or a dilute solution of strong mineral acid followed by solutions of lithium compounds. Examples describe the polymerization of tall oil fatty acids and oleic acids using lithium treated clay obtained by the several methods.
