Abstract

The formation of pitch in a paper-making process is controlled by adding to an aqueous fluid composition of the process enough of a control agent to give a concentration of at least 0.2 parts per million. The control agent is an N,N-dimethyl amide of a straight-chain carboxylic acid containing 18 carbon atoms and at least one double bond. Examples of such acids are oleic, linoleic, linolenic and ricinoleic. Mixtures may be used, such as those derived from tall, linseed, soyabean, cottonseed, corn, peanut, castor, olives, rapeseed, safflower or sesame oil. The composition to which the agent is added may be a paper furnish or a mixture of pulp and water. The process in which the agent is used may produce glassine soap wrap or greaseproof paper or unbleached kraft board.
