Abstract

In a method of making resilient material a liquid bonding agent is deposited on fragments of resilient cellular material, the liquid bonding agent comprising an organic polyisocyanate and a polyether, polyester or polyesteramide polyol having isocyanate-reactive groups in terminal or substantially terminal positions in each polyol molecule or a liquid partially reacted product thereof, the cellular material is compressed in a mould and the bonding agent is allowed to harden into a flexible solid reaction product without the application of heat. The cellular material may be polyurethane foam or of natural or synthetic rubber. Fragments of cross-sectional dimension greater than 0.3 cm., preferably 0.5 to 1.5 cm. should be used. Up to 25% by weight of chlorine-containing plasticizer, e.g. trichloroethyl phosphate can be included in the bonding agent to enhance the flame resistance of the products. The molar equivalence of polyisocyanate with respect to polyol may vary from 1.01:1 to 12:1. Suitable polyols are obtained by reacting ethylene oxide with an initial polyol or ethylene diamine. The polyisocyanate is preferably an aromatic or alicyclic diisocyanate. Triethylamine tri-, ethylene diamine and dibutyl tin dilaurate are suitable catalysts. The polyol and catalyst may be stirred with the fragments and the polyisocyanate is then stirred in. Alternatively a matured syrup of polyol and some of the polyisocyanate is first mixed with the fragments, followed by the rest of the polyisocyanate. In Examples (1) and (2) fragments of polyether polyurethane foam are stirred with a mixture of an ethylene diamine/propylene oxide/ethylene oxide reaction product and diphenylmethane diisocyanate. The mixture is put in a mould, and when bonding has occurred at room temperature the body is subjected to humid ageing at 85 DEG C. The molar equivalence of polyisocyanate to polyol is (1) 9:1 and (2) 5-4:1.
