Abstract
<PICT:0971459/C4-C5/1> An electroluminescent device comprises an electroluminescent layer 24 in engagement with one surface of a piezo-electric sheet 10, electrodes 12, 18 disposed on one side of the sheet 10 and so arranged to co-operate with at least one electrode 14 on the other side of the sheet that when electrical pulses are applied thereto elastic waves, accompanied by corresponding electrical fields, are caused to travel over the sheet 10 in directions inclined relatively to one another, and an elastic wave absorbing termination 30, 32, 34, 36, e.g. of lead, provided at each edge of the sheet. The piezo-electric sheet 10 can be of polarized sintered lead titanate-lead zirconate ceramic. The electrodes can comprise two pairs of elongated conductive strips, the electrodes of each pair being disposed substantially in register with one another on opposite sides of the piezo-electric sheet, Fig. 1, or can comprise elongated electrodes on one side of and co-operating with a common electrode 100 on the other side of the sheet, Fig. 2. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the piezo-electric sheet 10 and the layer 24 of electroluminescent material are sandwiched between the common electrode 100 and a further transparent electrode 102 and modulating signals can be applied between these electrodes. Means 40 are provided for applying a first pulse train to the electrode 12 and a second pulse train to the electrode 18 as described in Specification 905,682 The pulses of at least one of the pulse trains can have a progressively varying time spacing to produce a scanning action. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 801,985.
