971,421. Stacking-machines; lifting articles. VEREINIGTE METALLWERKE RANSHOFENBERNDORF A.G. March 12, 1962 [March 10, 1961], No. 9457/62. Headings B8C and B8H. Apparatus for stacking cast pigs comprises a conveyer which carries the pigs to a position beneath a bridge extending beyond both sides of the conveyer, a piston and cylinder lifting unit carried by a carriage movable along the entire length of the bridge, and tongs to lift pigs from the conveyer and deposit them on to a preselected platform under and near an end of the bridge. Pigs 3 pass along a conveyer 2 into the jaws of closed tongs 7, a control roller being depressed by the foremost pig of a block when a predetermined number thereof lie within said tongs, to actuate a switch which causes the tongs to rise, another switch being actuated at the top of their stroke to move the carriage 5 laterally along the bridge to platform 15 or 15<SP>1</SP>. A switch 16 then causes the tongs to move downwards and pivot outwardly to deposit the pigs on the platform, a switch being contacted to return the carriage to the middle of the bridge. The tongs are periodically turned through 90 degrees so that succeeding layers in the stack lie at right angles. When the stack reaches a predetermined height, a beam from photo-electric cells 14 is interrupted to cause the carriage to load the platform on the other side of the conveyer.
