A storage system for barrels or like loads, of the kind in which the loads are suspended from an endless conveyer selectively operable to bring a required load to an access point, employs two or more independently operated conveyers at least one of which runs vertically past its associated access point but runs horizontally over another portion of its path. Such L- shaped conveyer has its horizontal portion overlapping the horizontal portion of at least one other conveyer of the system and there may be other conveyers parallel or perpendicular to the overlapping pair. The illustrated embodiment comprises a horizontal conveyer 15 whose access point is at 5, a superimposed L-shaped conveyer 14 whose access point is at 4, duplicates (not shown) of these conveyers 14 and 15 arranged side by side along the length of the building I housing the system, and a like set of pairs of conveyers, seen end-on in the drawing, extending lengthwise of the building. In this latter set, both conveyers of each pair are L-shaped but have their vertical runs at opposite ends of the building. Each conveyer comprises a pair of parallel chains 16, Fig. 5, with guided rollers 19 and a carrier 22, e.g. for two or four barrels (see also Fig. 2), is slung between them. Alternatively (Fig. 3, not shown), the chains are joined by transverse rods carrying dependent load-engaging hooks.
