Abstract

979,931. Exhaust silencers. ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 12, 1962 [July 10, 1961], No. 5368/62. Heading F1B. An exhaust silencer comprises a conduit 10 containing resonater chambers 24, Fig. 1, formed by a plurality of tubes 12 the closed end 18 of each of which fits within the open end of the adjacent tube leaving passages 22 connecting the resonater space to the conduit. In Fig. 1 the reduced ends 16 of the tubes are a friction fit within projections 20 formed in the open ends, the passages 22 being formed between the projections. The resonant frequencies of the chambers 24 are determined by the extent to which the tubes interfit. In modifications the projections are formed on the ends 16 or are formed outwardly on the open ends. In Fig. 7 the reduced ends 60 are a clearance fit within the open ends 63.
