Abstract

Small quantities of carbon monoxide in a hydrogen-containing gas are reduced to methane by passage over a fixed Raney nickel type catalyst maintained by indirect steam heating at 180-230 DEG C. The catalyst, in the form of balls, rolls or pills, may be pure nickel or compositions obtained by dissolving, e.g. with 1% NaOH, only part, e.g. 3-30% of the metal other than nickel from alloys of nickel with, say, 20-80% of aluminium, zinc or magnesium. The gas, under a pressure of 5-50 atmospheres, is passed at 5 to 20 m.3 per litre of catalyst per hour through a reactor having a steam jacket. The gas may be preheated in a steam heat exchanger. Gas containing 0.1-0.8% CO has this content reduced to below 5 p.p.m.
