Abstract
979,441. Valves. P. H. WIEGEL. Aug. 1, 1961, No. 27952/61. Heading F2V. A valve for controlling pressurized oxygen comprises a valve closure member 14 mounted for axial movement within a housing 1 and an operating knob 8 associated with the closure member to control the open or closed position thereof, the closure member being maintained closed by a spring 12, the pressure of which can be relieved by an axially-movable member 7 connected to the knob. The knob is rotatably mounted on a stationary member 4 and coupled to one end of a shaft 5, the other end of the latter having a splined-connection with the movable member 7, which is screwed into the member 4. The closure member 14 is urged, via a washer 11, by the spring into the closed position shown in Fig. 1. Upon rotation of the knob the member is moved axially until after taking up a small clearance, shoulders 9, 10 on the member abut a flange 13 on the valve member and washer 11 thereby simultaneously relieving the spring pressure and opening the valve. In order to provide a more gradual opening of the valve an extension 16, Fig. 2, may be formed on the closure member. Again, in order to further delay the opening of the valve and prevent shock, the end of the member 7 may be lengthened and arranged to enter a cylindrical recess in the housing. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, a second spring 19 is arranged to act on the closure member so that, when the shoulder 9 abuts the closure member and just opens the latter, the pressure is relieved via the small clearance between the extension 16 and its co-operating bore; a pressure balance is then obtained and the spring 19 completely opens the valve, the loading of the spring 12 having been removed by the abutment of the shoulder 10 and washer 11. In the further modification shown in Fig. 8, the extension 16 is dispensed with and the gradual pressure balance is effected by means of a small bore 20 in the closure member controlled by a needle valve 21, the latter being opened by the abutment of a shoulder 10 on the member 7 with a disc 11a on the needle valve.
