Abstract

Isocyanates are prepared by reacting an amine with excess phosgene to form a carbamyl chloride-amine hydrochloride slurry, concentrating the slurry by dividing it, without distillation, into a high-solids content portion and a portion free of or with a low content of solids, heating the concentrated slurry, if desired after adding additional phosgene, to form the isocyanate, e.g. at at least 78 DEG C., and recycling excess phosgene to the first phosgenation step. An excess of phosgene of 10-600% is preferably used. Examples prepare toluylene-2, 4-diisocyanate, a mixture of toluylene-2, 4- and -2, 6-diisocyanates, p-chlorophenyl isocyanate, 4, 41-di-(isocyanatophenyl)-methane and phenyl isocyanate. Many other isocyanates are listed.
