979,236. Mixing and wetting solid materials. W. LODIGE, F. LODIGE, and J. LUCKE. June 19, 1962 [July 15, 1961], No. 23589/62. Heading B1C. A batch or continuous process for mixing and, if desired, wetting solid materials in an apparatus having a horizontal drum 2, and a shaft 3 having arms with mixing tools carried close to the drum wall, includes charging the drum to not more than 30% of its gross volume and rotating the mixing tools at such speed that the material does not collect in the bottom of the drum but part of it forms a rotating ring on the inner wall of the drum and part is whisked around in the centre of the drum. Liquid may be sprayed on the inner surface of the ring of material by centrifugal atomizers 9 which spray out the liquid in several superimposed planes, or by spray nozzles (see Fig. 4, not shown). The drum has an inlet 1, and an outlet 10 at the opposite end with adjustable sliding doors 11. The mixing tools may be helically arranged or otherwise staggered round the shaft 3, and are preferably of single or double ploughshare form.
