An arrangement for ascertaining dimensional differences of objects comprises an A.C. bridge, two arms of which have each an inductance or capacitance, a third arm comprising a coil or a capacitor adapted to receive within its winding turns or between its plates a standard object, a fourth arm comprising a coil or capacitor adapted to receive successively objects to be tested, and a means of ascertaining dimensional differences between the standard and test objects. The bridge output may operate an indicating, alarm, or control circuit, and may produce an effective signal only when a dimension of the object under test is reduced by a predetermined amount. A bit in a drilling machine may be checked between operations.
