Abstract
978,973. Vacuum switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 13, 1962 [June 30, 1961], No. 23647/61. Heading H2B. In a vacuum switch parts of the contacts are " current conditioned " by arc discharges under vacuum and the arcing during operation of the switch is restricted to the conditioned areas by stabilizing electrodes between parts of the contacts which have not been conditioned, the electrodes being made of a material having an arcdischarge voltage greater than half the maximum discharge voltage than can occur between the contacts. In Fig. 1 the fixed and moving contacts 10, 11 are surrounded by a cylindrical metal electrode 13 which is insulated from the contacts and has an annular extension 13a which assists in limiting the arcing to the conditional area of the contacts. In Fig. 3 the moving contact 17 engages the final contact 16 in two extreme positions and the electrodes 20, 20<SP>1</SP> have annular extensions 20a. The contacts may be of copper and the electrodes of tungsten or molybdenum or alternatively the electrodes may include " getter " material such as tantalum, zirconium or titanium and have a corrugated surface. The cylinder 13 or plates 20 may be extended to shield other parts of the switch from " line of sight " arcing.
