978,975. Electric selective signalling systems. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 24, 1962 [July 24,1961], No. 26724/61. Heading G4H. In a shaft position digitising system four commutators, each producing a marking one one of ten leads, are geared together, and each, except the units commutator, has a pair of lead/lag brushes selectively controlled by the next lower commutator. The brush of the units commutator is sufficiently wider than the gaps between the conductive segments of the commutator, so that an output is always produced and this results in two leads being marked simultaneously during the transitions from one digit to the next. To compensate for this a circuit Fig. 9 is shown which produces a pure binary representation DEFG of the input lead 1 to 0 which is marked, the circuit being characterized in that the pure binary output DEFG always produces a representation corresponding to the higher of two marked input leads when two are marked. The outputs of the other commutators are also recorded to pure binary but no transitional difficulties arise (because of the lead/lag brushes) and a conventional diode network is used.
