Abstract

A ferroxane-siloxane polymer can be made by reacting a mono-alkali metal salt of an organosilane-diol or -triol with a ferric halide, eliminating the alkali metal halide formed and polymerizing the reaction product. The Si-bonded organic radicals may be alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl, but are preferably phenyl, and FeCl3 is the preferred halide. In Examples (1) a diethyl-ether solution of the mono-sodium salt of diphenylsilane diol was added to an ethanol solution of anhydrous FeCl3, and the resulting mixture was refluxed for 30 minutes and filtered; the filtrate was evaporated to dryness and the residue was dissolved in chloroform, filtered and again evaporated to dryness to yield a partially condensed ferroxane-diphenylsiloxane polymer; (2) FeCl3 was similarly reacted with the monosodium salt of phenylsilane-triol to yield a brown, resinous polymer.
