Abstract

977,860. Spray-producers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 6, 1963 [Dec. 18, 1962], No. 47824/62. Heading B2F. A nozzle suitable for use in spraying paint or plaster, or for discharging cake icing, comprises a truncated cone 11 of coiled flexible material supported within an apertured cap 14 upon a recessed support 15, the aperture 13 in the cap being of truncated conical form so that longitudinal movement of the cap relative to the support 15 changes the diameter of the nozzle orifice 18. The flexible material may be a strip of phosphor-bronze or beryllium copper. As the cap 14 is screwed down on the support the lower edge 16 of the coiled strip engages the internal face of an annular groove 17 in the support. This position represents the minimum diameter of the orifice 18. As the cap 14 is screwed off the strip uncoils and the maximum diameter of the orifice 18 is reached when the edge 16 engages the outer face of the groove 17. A retaining ring 12 may be provided for the strip and a pin or hook 20 holds it in position against rotation. The annular groove 17 may be of L-shape in cross-section. The space 21 may be filled with grease or washers to prevent the ingress of foreign material. The coiled strip may be replaced by others of different widths.
