Abstract
In a process for producing a solid gamma radiation shielding material a powdered metal with an atomic number greater than 40 is added to a mixture of plastic resin, plasticizer and where required for the resin, curing agent, the metal/plastic mixture being raised to an elevated temperature in order to effect curing and/or liquefaction for incorporation of the air, incorporating air into the metal powder/plastic material by vigorously stirring it and cooling. The invention also comprises a gamma radiation shielding material obtained by curing a mixture comprising polyurethane, powdered lead or tungsten, a plasticizer consisting of trichlorethyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, castor oil, dibutyl phthalate or dioctyl phthalate, a polymerization curing agent consisting of benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide or methylene-bis-(orthochloroaniline) and sufficient included air to produce a density of 1.3 to 1.5 gm./cubic centimetre in the shielding material. Bismuth and tantalum are other suitable metals. A particle size range from 30 to 100 microns average diameter is preferred. Suitable plastics are polyurethane and polyethylene or, vinyls, acrylics and phenolformaldehyde plastics. In an example air is whipped into a mixture of polyurethane (a reaction product of a diisocyanate and polyalkylene ether glycol), methylenebis (o-chloroaniline) castor oil and tungsten powder. The mixture is cured at 150 DEG C. in a mould. A lead-polythylene material is prepared by whipping air into a mixture polyethylene, dibutyl phthalate and lead powder at 200 DEG C., pouring into a mould and cooling.
