Abstract
977,189. Welding by fusion. GOTAVERKEN A.B. Sept. 19, 1963 [Oct. 26, 1962]. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H5] A gas-shielded non-consumable electrode arc welding torch for internally welding apertured workpieces such as pipes, comprises an insulating sleeve 4 of slightly smaller diameter than the aperture in the workpiece 13 and a rod-like electrode 3 within and filling a substantial portion of the bore of the sleeve 4 and having a laterally directed tip 5 that does not project beyond the surface of the main part of the electrode 3. Argon is fed from an inlet 9 to the space 15 between the sleeve 3 and the bore of the workpiece 13. An adjustable nut 12 on the torch body 1 locates the electrode tip 5 axially and has a sealing surface engaging the workpiece 13 to prevent loss of shielding gas. A member 6 connected to the end of the electrode 3 remote from the tip 5 is driven by an electric motor to rotate the electrode 3 relative to the sleeve 4 and body 1 during welding. The electrode 3 may be a tungsten rod or a tungsten tip connected to a rod of conductive material.
