In a method of analysing a ternary mixture by placing it in a chamber 7, filling a chamber 8 with a standard medium and rotating compensator plate 9 relative to compensator plate 10 so that the interference band system produced by light which has traversed chambers 7, 8, is returned to the zero position as shown by the band system produced by light which has passed outside of the chambers 7, 8, the four beams being produced by a light source 1, slit 3, collimator lens 4, diaphragm 5 and rhombic prism 6, three measurements are made in succession the first measurement being made with white light and the other two with monochromatic light of different wavelengths e.g. red and blue light. The appropriate filter may be placed at 13 after the cylindrical telescope eyepiece 12 and the filters may be mounted in a revolving disc. The prism 6 and diaphragm 5 may be replaced by a dovetailed prism whose re-entrant surfaces have opaque layers of varnish.
