Abstract

976,140. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Jan. 22, 1963 [Feb. 12, 1962], No. 2693/63. Heading B6B. Sheet - forwarding and aligning mechanism includes a member movable or rotatable in a plane at an oblique angle to a sheet registration edge to drive the sheet into contact with the edge, said member being laterally deflectable by the resistance offered to the sheet when it engages said edge to prevent damage or crumpling of the sheet by the edge. One or more discs 8 are mounted upon rotating shafts 11 driven through belts and pulleys 17-19. The shafts are journalled in bearings 12, 13 carried by brackets 14 secured by screws 15 to a support 16. The discs are formed from flexible material, e.g. polymethane synthetic material, and are sufficiently thin and/or are provided with radial slots 23 to permit lateral deflection of those portions 24 of the discs in contact with a sheet S registered against a side guide 9. The discs co-operate with freely rotatable rollers 20 projecting through slots 22 in the table 10 and mounted on stub shafts secured to downward extensions of the brackets 14. The rollers 20 may lie in a plane parallel to the side guide 9. The bottom of the brackets have scales marked thereon to permit accurate adjustment of the angle of each disc with the side guide. The discs may be replaced by endless belts, each belt being formed from flexible elements separated by slots. Each belt is driven at an oblique angle to the registration edge.
