976,049. Engine casings; cooling engines. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A.G. March 6, 1963 [March 22, 1962], No. 8968/63. Heading B7H. The engine 4 of a motor vehicle is provided with a soundproof jacket 5 whch completely surrounds the engine except for openings for intake and exhaust ducts, a drive shaft, control linkages, electric wiring and the pipes 6, 7 of a coolant circuit. The jacket 5 may have an inner or outer soundproofing coat of a lacquer providing satisfactory heat dissipation. In Fig. 1, the radiators 10 of the coolant circuit are arranged side by side as shown, or one above another, in a tapering well 8 disposed immediately behind the driver's cab and acting as a chimney, additional draught being induced by an arcuate portion 11 projecting from the cab. In Figs. 3, 4 the radiator 17 is secured beneath the vehicle body, a fan driven by shafting and bevel gearing from the gear-box 21 being arranged in front of the radiator, or, as shown, air is supplied to the radiator through a duct 24 by a fan 22 driven from the propeller shaft 23 through a continuously variable V-belt transmission 25 which is adjusted to compensate for variations in propeller shaft speed by a centrifugal governor 26. The fan may alternatively be driven by an hydraulic motor fed from the oil circuit of the engine 4, or by an electric motor fed by the vehicle battery and controlled by a thermostat responsive to the coolant temperature or to the ambient temperature.
