Abstract
975,559. Protecting pneumatic tyres from heat blow-out. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. May 29, 1961 [June 16, 1960], No. 21127/60. Heading B7C. A pneumatic tyre inner tube for use in aircraft wheel and tyre assemblies is provided with at least one radially extending hollow stem 6 communicating with the tube interior 13 and air-tightly sealed by a plunger 17 retained in the stem passage by a plug 19 of a metal, such as eutectic alloy, which melts rapidly at a predetermined temperature to permit ejection of the plunger and deflation of the tyre tube. Three such stems 6 may be provided equidistantly around the tube with one diametrically opposite the inflation valve of the tube. As shown, the stem has a necked and flanged inner end 10, 8 whereby it is anchored to the tube and has an axial bore of two different diameters, the larger diameter portion 12 being at the outer end and being screw-threaded to receive a correspondingly screw-threaded plug 19. The stem 6 is externally screw-threaded whereby it is clamped to the wheel rim through which it extends, and the plunger 17 topped by a rubber disc-seal 18 is also housed in the larger diameter bore 12. In alternative arrangements the plug 19 may comprise a circlip engaged in necked portion of the plunger and resting on a step in the stem bore, or a rod extending through transverse holes in the plunger and stem.
