Abstract
975,421. Acrylate polymers. ROHM & HAAS CO. March 3, 1961 [March 7, 1960], No. 7919/61. Heading C3G. Solid, thermoplastic, polymeric products are made by polymerizing a charge consisting of monovinylidene monomers and containing at least 80% by weight of one or more C 1 -C 4 alkyl methacrylates in intimate contact with a preformed polymer consisting of units derived from one or more monovinylidene monomers, at least 80% by weight of the units corresponding to one or more C 1 -C 8 alkyl acrylates, the amount of the monomer charge being from 25 to 60% of the combined weight of the charge and the preformed polymer. Other monomers which may be present during polymerization are lower alkyl acrylates, acrylic and methacrylic acids and nitriles, vinyl halides and esters, styrene and vinyl toluene. Such other monomers may also be used in the preparation of the preformed acrylate polymer, except that lower alkyl methacrylates are used in place of the corresponding acrylates. Polymerization of the monomer charge is preferably carried out in an aqueous emulsion of the preformed acrylate polymer. The resulting products, which appear to be graft polymers, are used in blends with vinyl chloride polymers. The examples describe polymerizing methyl methacrylate in emulsions of polymethyl, polyethyl, poly(n-butyl), poly(noctyl) and poly(2-ethylhexyl) acrylates, and poly- (ethyl acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate), and the polymerization of ethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate and a mixture of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate in emulsions of poly(2- ethylhexyl)acrylate.
