Abstract
974,470. Heat exchangers; air conditioning. C. G. MUNTERS. Nov. 24, 1960 [Nov. 24, 1959], No. 40431/60. Headings F4S and F4V. In a heat exchanger for a liquid and a gas wherein separated interspaces for the liquid and the gas are bounded by partitions so that the partition of a liquid interspace and the partition of a gas interspace are in contact with each other, the partition on the liquid side is of pliable material so that it assumes the shape of the partition on the gas side. As shown, sheets 22, 24 of plastics material such as polythene define a liquid interspace 44. The sheets are cemented or welded together at their edges 26 to form a closed jacket 27 with strips or seams 28, 30 of forming a zigzag-shaped fluid passage. The jackets 27 are separated by open-sided units 32 comprising three plane sheets 34, 36, 38 of more rigid material such as aluminium sheets between 0.025 mm. and 0.2 mm. thick separated by corrugated sheets 40, 42 all secured together by a bonding agent such as water glass, or urea resin glue. The jackets 27 and the units 32 are united by inlet and outlet channels 46, 48 formed by interfitting tubular members 52 penetrating lugs 50 in the pliable material at diagonally opposite comers of the sheets 22, 24. The members 52 have circumferentially spaced holes 54 opening into the liquid interspaces 44. The pliable material is extended round the members 52 in a bulbous manner at 56 and clamped between adjacent members 52. The sheets 22, 24 may be replaced by thin easily-pliable metal or one sheet may be metal and the other of plastics material. The sheets 40, 42 may be arranged with the corrugations vertically and with means at their lower ends to allow draining of any condensed fluid as described in Specification 837,601. The strips 28, 30 may be parallel with the ridges of the corrugated sheets and arranged to subdivide the liquid flow into parallel streams. For air conditioning, the heat exchanger is mounted in a wall aperture so that air flows horizontally through the units 32 which on the outlet side are controlled by a louvre type damper. Hot or cold water circulates in the spaces 44 as required.
