Abstract

974,336. Ships' lifeboats. FAIREY MARINE Ltd. March 14, 1962 [March 17, 1961], No. 9960/61. Headings B7A, B7M, B7S and B7V. A ship's lifeboat comprises a wholly enclosed capsule 1 the lower part of which in transverse crosssection tapers generally towards the bottom, the capsule being ballasted to float low in the water with the wider end of its section uppermost and with the majority of its depth below the water level. The walls and/or roof of the capsule are partly or wholly covered with an internal or external layer of heatinsulating and/or heat resisting material. Fig. 3 shows the cavity between an inner shell 17 and the capsule wall 8 filled with heat resisting and insulating material at least above the water line. Sea water from a manually operated pump is distributed over the roof by a perforated pipe 19. The forward end of the capsule has a guarded cutaway portion 15 in which is located a screw propeller 16 driven by a motor 25 by air supplied from a cylinder 9. The lifeboat is stowed on board ship in a recess 27 (Fig. 5) forming part of a fire-proofed chamber (not shown). The capsule is held on the ramp 26 by a releasable hook (not shown) which is automatically released when the hatch 7 is clamped closed, the ral e of fall of the capsule into the sea being controlled by a friction winch 28.
