Abstract

A composition suitable for the manufacture of moulded bodies and coatings comprises an unsaturated polyester resin, a vinyl or vinylidene monomer, a radical forming agent, an accelerator if desired, and from 1 to 30% by weight of itaconic, citraconic or maleic anhydride or mixtures thereof, calculated on the sum of the polyester and monomer. Lists of polyester-forming components and vinyl and vinylidene monomers are given. Fillers and fibrous materials may be present e.g. glass fibres, polyethylene terephthalate, asbestos, chalk, ground glass and silicon carbide, organic dyestuffs and pigments may also be added. In the examples the polyester resins are prepared from (1) maleic and phthalic anhydrides and propylene glycol; (2) maleic and phthalic anhydrides, ethelene glycol, dicyclopentadiene and linseed or fish oil; (3) maleic and phthalic anhydrides, adipic acid, ethylene glycol and dihydroxy ethylaniline and (4) maleic and phthalic anhydrides, ethylene glycol, pentaerythritol diallyl ether and dicyclopentadiene. The comonomers for the polyesters are styrene and styrene/methyl methacrylate mixtures.
