Abstract

In a chromium diffusion process for chromizing nickel and/or cobalt or nickel and/or cobalt and iron based alloys containing 5-30% Cr, 0-6.5% Mo, 0-10% W, 0-3% V, 0-5% Ti, 0-5% Ta/Nb, 0-8% Al, 0-2% Si, 0-2% Mn, 0-0.5% B, 0-0.5% Zr and 0-5% Fe, the alloy parts are packed in a mixture of finely powdered non porous inactive material such as alumina or magnesia containing 0.5-5% chromic chloride and heated to above 950 DEG C. in a non oxidizing atmosphere. The process is carried out in a retort and pieces of chronium or ferrochrome may also be placed in the retort separate from the powder mixture so that chromium chloride is regenerated during the process. The alloy may also contain up to 50% iron.
