Abstract

963,161. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 28, 1963 [April 13, 1962], No. 14349/62. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor the moderator comprises an equilibrium mixture of a solid acceptor material containing a moderator and the same moderator in a fluid phase, the reactor being adapted for variation of the equilibrium conditions so as to vary the moderator content of the acceptor material. The moderator is preferably a metallic hydride, e. g. titanium or zirconium hydride, in contact with gaseous hydrogen, but deuterides might be used as an alternative. In the reactor shown the fuel elements 19 are disposed in pressure tubes 18 and are cooled by pressurised heavy waters. A titanium hydride moderator 21 surrounds the tubes and is in contact with a toroidal chamber 22 through an apertured wall. The chamber 22 is filled with a gaseous mixture of hydrogen and an inert carrier gas and the pressure of the mixture can be varied, thus varying the hydrogen content of the moderator 21. As fuel burns up in the reactor the average coolant temperature drops due to reduced reactivity, and at intervals the average temperature is raised by increasing the hydrogen pressure to cause greater moderation within the reactor.
