Abstract

An aqueous lubricating composition, specially suitable as a soluble or emulsion cutting oil or hydraulic fluid, comprises at least one water-soluble surface active agent and from 0.1 to 40% by wt., based on the total composition, of a water-soluble thiodiglycol having the general formula <FORM:0962008/C4-C5/1> where x and y are integers from 1 to 6. Preferred thiodiglycols are dihydroxydipropylsulphide and dihydroxydiethylsulphide. The surface-active agent, which may be anionic, cationic or non-ionic, may be any of those specified on pages 15-17 and 25-213 of "Surface-Active Agents" by Schwartz-Perry, published 1949 by Interscience Publishers Inc. Specific one referred to are polyoxyethylene stearate, the sodium salt of di-(C12 alkyl) phosphate, and other phosphoric acid esters and salts thereof. Specifications 618,538, 721,594 and 750,340 are referred to.
