Abstract

968,287. Fume cupboards. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 29, 1963 [Jan. 31, 1962], No. 3631/62. Heading F4X. A fume cupboard 1 arranged in a room has a sliding sash window 3 recessed behind the face of the cupboard, a fan 5 for withdrawing air and fumes from the cupboard and a grilled aperture 8 located above the window and communicating with a space 6 above the cupboard, the space being connected to the external atmosphere through an inlet 9 whereby, when the fan is operating, air external to the room is drawn to the window opening as a descending air curtain and into the fume cupboard as obnoxious air is withdrawn. When the fume cupboard is out of use the inlet 9 is closed by a motorized damper 13. The space 6 is also connected through a draught stabilizer 12 to the fume exhaust duct 4, the stabilizer being arranged to open either as the cupboard front 3 is closed down or when there is a pressure drop in the cupboard.
