Abstract

967, 247. Photo-electric detection of movement of an article. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY Ltd. Nov. 30, 1962 [Nov. 30, 1961], No. 42885/61. Heading G1A. The invention relates to a transducer which enables movement of an article to be measured, and comprises a light source 7 and a photo-cell 12, between which are positioned a linearly movable plate 4 having a triangular aperture 6 which plate is moved by the said article, and a stationary element 8 having a slot 9 the arrangement being such that the amount of light reading the photo-cell 12 is directly proportional to the position of the aperture 6 relative to the slot 9 and hence the output of the photo-cell is proportional to the position of the plate. In the embodiment shown the plate 4 is clamped to a rod 3 which is slidably mounted in holes 2 in a housing 1 and abuts or is secured to a mechanism or article (not shown) whose movement is under investigation. Light from the source 7 after passing through the aperture 6, the slot 9 and a hole 14 in the housing 1 is focused by a semi-cylindrical lens 10 on to a prism 11 where it is reflected on to the photo-cell 12 the output from which may be amplified for direct measurement purposes or may be 'used for the control of other circuits. The plate 4 may be spring loaded against one of the walls of the housing 1 having the holes 2. In place of the element 8 having the slot 9 a slot may replace the hole 14 in the housing 1.
