Abstract
A selected area of a body is coated with a suitable plastics material by protecting the remaining area of its surface with a removable mask in the form of a jig, and immersing the masked body in a fluidized bed of particles of the plastics material, the body being heated to a selected temperature sufficient to cause the particles adjacent the selected area to coalesce and form the layer. The mask is so dimensioned that ingress of the plastics material between the opposed faces of the mask and the body is prevented; the clearance gap at the edges of the mask should not exceed 0,005 inch. The body may be heated before the mask is applied thereto, and the selected area of the body may be pre-coated with an insulating varnish to improve adhesion of the plastics material, which may be, e.g., polyethylene, polystyrene, a polyamide or a thermosetting epoxy resin. The invention is described as applied to rotors and stators for dynamo-electric machines, the mask consisting of outer and inner rings supported by diametral die members provided with pins for supporting the article to be coated away from such members.
