Abstract
966,334. Rotatable pipe couplings. OLIN MATHIESON Ltd. Oct. 12, 1962 [Sept. 18, 1961], No. 33386/61. Heading F2G. A releasable pipe coupling comprises two members 1, 2 each internally screw-threaded at opposite ends to receive a pipe, one member 1 having a tubular cylindrical spigot 3, the other member 2 having a cylindrical socket 4 rotatably receiving said spigot. Situated in grooves 6, 7 in the spigot and socket respectively is a ring 5 of mild steel wire serving to retain the members together. Loosely fitting in grooves 9, 10 in the spigot and socket is a further ring 8 serving to retain the members together if the ring 5 fractures but also allowing fluid to escape. The rings 5, 8 are inserted through holes in the wall of socket 2 (Fig. 2, not shown). The spigot and socket have frusto-conical sealing surfaces 15 acting with corresponding surfaces on the pipes to create a fluid-tight seal.
